UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH

From May-August 2025, I researched the effectiveness of LiDAR scanning at estimating prescribed burn pile mass in Lyons, Colorado with the Hannigan Air Quality & Technology (HAQ) Lab. Due to the Colorado Front Range's status as a Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI), understanding wildfire in Colorado helps mitigate deeply humanitarian issues. Under the mentorship of PhD students Annamarie Guth and Percy Smith, I spent several long days in the field scanning burn piles and weighing pile masses by hand with a luggage scale. In the lab, I used CloudCompare point cloud software to stitch pile masses, as well as Microsoft Excel and MATLAB to analyze and graph data, drawing scientific conclusions from my work before synthesizing it into a final presentation at the end of the summer.
